Christmas Upcycle

Where does the time go?
Here we are in the middle of January!

For years I've decorated our Christmas tree in gorgeous shades of pink (my favorite color)! After years of groans from the boys in my house, I decided this year we needed a change. Instead of purchasing all new decorations, I used the same beautiful ornaments. Afterall we hear that going green means recycling, reusing and repurposing. So here are my "green" ornaments.

These beauties were created using vintage sheet music and vintage glass glitter.

I painted half of the ornaments in metalic shades of Rich Espresso, Champagne Gold and Taupe.

The other half of the ornamenets I glittered in Martha Stewart shades of Bronze, Chocolate Brown and Silver.

I'll be posting additional photos of the projects I've been working on recently, stay tuned this week.

I {HEART} Ball Jars

I absolutely LOVE vintage ball jars!

I found 38 jars for $10 on Craigslist several months ago. I knew I would have no problem finding uses for them! Aquas are my fav!

I've recently come across a website with LOTS of inspiration and I'm hooked, it's called Pinterest. If you're interested, let me know and I can send you an invite. But beware...it's ADDICTING!

The purpose of the Memory Jar is that over the course of a year you jot down memories and toss them in the jar. On New Year's Eve you sit down with your fam and read what everyone jotted down. I think this is going to be a new family tradition for us. Next time you come to visit, be sure to drop in your fav memory with us! This idea came from Pinterest.

The Sewing Jar is intended for thread, needles and a tiny pair of scissors. I had a whole different idea...I used vintage sewing thread spools and wrapped them in all the different shades of bakers twine I have. I used burlap for the pin cushion top. This idea came from Martha Stewart.

I used a matte white spray paint to create these Milk Glass looking jars. I got this idea from a friend, Thanks Amber!

They could be used as vases, a paint brush holder, a pen/pencil holder, a utensil holder in the kitchen, for cotton balls in the bathroom...just about ANYTHING!

After taking the before photo...I changed my mind about the DMC floss...I didn't end up using it. I did however use my Quickutz Finale alphabet to cut the letters from felt. I had all the supplies to personalize the stockings. I love the way they turned out!

I wasn't completely happy with the stamped letters, so I re-did the letters in chipboard.

Here is an easy & fun way to countdown any holiday, event, vacation, birthday, graduation, etc! Since today is December 1st, we are counting down to Christmas!

I designed this banner for a custom class in December.

I used a Maya Road Triangle Banner Album, Maya Road Chipboard Snowflakes, Stickles in Platinum, vintage sheet music, vintage sewing patterns and tinsel. I love all things vintage and sparkly for the holiday season!

Super Finds

I've been to our local antique stores, yard sales and here I find these awesome finds online...

I found these 2 oak cabinets on Craigslist $30 for BOTH! With this one, I think I will remove the doors, paint & distress it and use it as a bookshelf.

This one is fantastic but the glass is chipped and falling out of the cabinet. Think I might replace the glass with wood, beadboard or even chicken wire, paint & distress and use it as a linen cabinet.

These wooden rolltop desk drawers were also on Craigslist for FREE! I have so many ideas for these babies, storage of all types. Paint, stain, distress, glass knobs... What would you do with them?

Burlap coffee sacks on eBay $8.99 for 6. 3 of the sumatra with the aqua stripe and 3 of the German coffee beans. These are HUGE at almost 4'x2'. I will no doubt make some throw pillows and maybe even re-upholster something.

Ball Mason jars...38 to be exact from pint to quart...$10 on Craigslist. Can you see all the possibilities? Vases, storage for pens, buttons, paint brushes, hardware, etc...

Vintage Suitcase

I just love this suitcase...but we don't use it. So why not repurpose it so that I can enjoy it all the time...

The fabric is left over from another project. Minwax Dark Walnut and wooden furniture feet for a whooping $2.68 a piece from The Home Depot. Do you see my vision?

After hubby performed demo on it and removed the top, I realized the inside satin fabric was too musty and stained to keep. I pulled out my sewing machine and went to work on creating a new lining. After the piece was sewn together I glued it into place using Fabritac. Threw together a soft and cuddly pillow and voila!

And it's Coco approved! :)

ABC Sampler

While antique store shopping with a friend last year I saw a fantastic alpha sampler. But at $60 I thought I would attempt one myself...

After a coat of ivory paint and stamping the alpha in black paint...

A little distressing and voila!

Not only was I happy with the project but it only took about 10 mintues from start to finish!

I made one for my dear friend Amber as well...my antique store buddy!

The Kitchen Table

This was an antique store find at around $30...

I forgot to take a photo before I started stripping the finish. The table had several layers of stain that I thought would never completely lift, what a mess to get off! So this before photo looks much better then the table looked when I brought it home.

Here is the finished table! I used Minwax Dark Walnut stain on the table top and ivory paint with the same stain rubbed to obtain the antique finish.

My inspiration was a table from Pier 1 that retails for $495.

Love the finished piece!

So the first couple of layers of stain went on quickly and dried just as fast in this 100 degree weather. But the fourth and final layer was a little tacky when we brought it in the house to finish drying. I made sure to tell the hubby and kids to "stay clear" of the table until I gave the green light that it was completely dry. But...I didn't think to put the kitty in the girls room!

If it were just the one paw print, I might consider leaving it. But it's across the surface of the table! When I came downstairs and saw little brown paw prints on the kitchen floor it took a minute to figure out what it was. I just starred at the table laughing.

Fine steel wool and a final layer of stain...all will be good again!

Here is the next project in line...

I got these fantastic chairs on Craigslist for $40 for 4. What a steal!

Wait till you see the chocolate velvet brocade fabric I got for the seat cushions.

As of Saturday, I am now a Certified Personal Trainer!

National Academy of Sports Medicine gave me a run for my money! WHEW! What an amazing experience to be able to go back to school at 35 and obtain something I never knew was such a passion. My hubby, family and friends have been such a HUGE source of support and encouragement. Thank you!

Beware...I may be tempted to share all kinds of health and fitness info!

AND...hubby celebrated 20 years in the Air Force yesterday. Babe...you are an inspiration. LOVE YOU!

SUPER EASY FANTASTICALLY DELICIOUS HOMEMADE PIZZA CRUST

1 (.25 oz) package active dry yeast
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 cup warm water
2 1/2 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt

In a medium bowl combine yeast, sugar and water. Allow to completely dissolve, until creamy, about 5-10 minutes, then stir. Add flour, oil and salt. Beat until smooth. Allow to rest for 5 minutes. Roll out on a lightly floured surface.

I used a pizza stone, transfered my round dough to the stone and added our toppings. I baked in a pre-heated 450 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Once you remove your pizza from the oven, allow to cool for about 10 minutes.

YUM YUM! Enjoy!

My apologies to my faithful bloggers! Life has been BUSY!

Tanner had surgery 2 weeks ago...

He was a trooper and did a GREAT job! He is sleeping through the night without needing pain meds and he is eating again! WOOHOO!

Now for the good stuff....

As most of you know...hubby is in Iraq until next summer. His base is involved in numerous events that support the local communities. The base is currently working on getting much needed school supplies to the Iraqi children.

The base is requesting "school kits" that include the following:

1 composition notebook
1 small box of colored pencils (not crayons)
3 plain folders with pockets
1 package of paper (wide ruled)
1 blunt tip scissor
1 ruler
1 small pencil sharpener
1 large eraser
1 zipper pencil pouch
1 dozen pencils

I will be packaging up the kits and shipping them to Iraq on September 15th.

I took the kids down to the coast on Friday to enjoy the beach and take a look at the tide pools at Crystal Cove. We didn't arrive at the ideal time for the tide pools but had a blast, it was gorgeous!

If you haven't already noticed, I love everything vintage. This paper line is from Daisy D Paper Company that sadly closed their doors on June 15th. I ordered everything I could from this super gorgeous vintage line. I will not be able to place another order and only have a limited amount of kits available. I intended to send hubby with a small album of photos but never did get a chance to make it before he left. Since he's arrived in Iraq, the guys are giving him a hard time for not bringing photos of his family! :)

Today is the day we take hubby/daddy to the airport for his first of 2 training courses before his year long tour of duty in Iraq. Today hubby flys out to Fairchild AFB Washington for ECAC (Evasion & Conduct After Capture) training, flys home on Friday, home for a couple days for Tanner's 3rd birthday, flys back out on Sunday to Fort Dix AFB New Jersey for Flight Advisory training, flys home the middle of May, home for 2 weeks & then flys out to Iraq for 1 year!

And so it begins, waiting and praying...praying and waiting...

Lucky Me Class

A couple Saturdays ago I took a FANTASTIC class in Poway at Cool Scrapbook Stuff taught by Katie Watson. I learned some fun new techniques and had a blast!

Here is the album we created, using mostly Pink Paislee and Maya Road.

As an instructor myself, I love taking classes! I think of it as continuing education! Meeting other instructors along the way.

This weekend I'm going on a weekend retreat with a couple friends in French Valley. I am really looking forward to getting a weekend of creative time! You can look at the retreat house HERE. A friend Christine and her husband own the house and have done a beautiful job in setting it up!

Preparation

Can you imagine what we are preparing for...

Hubby got orders yesterday for a year long tour of duty in Iraq. Over the next several weeks he will be training and preparing. Yesterday he arrived home with an array of uniforms, gear and essentials.

How do you emotionally and physically prepare for something like this? Hubby will be well equipped and ready, I have every confidence in that! I will focus on the kids, the daily routine and staying busy.

We hold dear the moments and memories we share with our loved ones. In a time like this, we cherish them to a new degree. For the military families that have experienced this before, you know the meaning of preparation, support and everyday survival. I continue to learn.

How will I ever be able to say goodbye? Although it may only be for a year...he will be away for our anniversary, his birthday, my birthday, the kids birthdays, our everydays, at bedtime, for good times and bad, but most of all he will be away serving our country.

Thank you Honey! I LOVE YOU!

It's been a busy week!

Tuesday night we went out to dinner to The Cheesecake Factory.

Went for coffee at our fav The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

And bought a new car for hubby's commute. A little bitty Chevy Aveo 5. It's fun and growing on me. A BIG difference from what I drive, our Chevy Tahoe!

Tanner completely enjoyed a sucker today! He willingly shared that much coveted sucker with MOI and what started as a friendly sharing session turned into a giggling sucker fight! We had a blast, and his little sticky face, hands and giggles were evidence of such FUN!

Snow Day Mini

We got 22 inches of snow in December in ONE DAY! It was the most snow I'd ever seen! We had so much fun! The kids played in it until their fingers were frozen and their lips were blue!

I used a Basic Grey Milk Chocolate Chipboard Album, My Mind's Eye patterned paper, Velvet Thickers, October Afternoon Snow Flurries Rub-Ons and a white zig paint pen. This was the first time I had used a white pen on photos, loved the finished result.

Upon returning from lunch there was an obvious stir at the Paris Hilton booth, and we found out she would be making an appearance. We (me and Michelle from AMM) caught up in the moment and waited 45 minutes for a Paris sighting! :)

These guys here think they are part of the Secret Service, CHA style (let's not tell them they're NOT)! It's Paris Hilton MAN, not Obama! Although a scrapbook designer challenged her to a glue stick smack down I don't think she's in much danger at a scrapbook trade show!

And look who I got to take a photo with! :)

I got a photo with Teresa Collins too! I chatted with Heidi Swapp, Anna Griffith and a few others too. Everyone was so nice and friendly, not very crowded so we had lots of opportunity to talk to people. FUN FUN FUN!

Reuse

I'm always looking for secondary functions of items I'm no longer using. Especially glass jars and containers are great for storage.

These fruit jars were PERFECT for re-purposing for buttons in my scrapbook stash. The labels came off beautifully under hot water. The black ink printed on the glass came off nicely with a Mr. Clean magic eraser. Making Memories paint in Asphalt only needed 2 coats.

Snow in Southern Cali BABY! And I'm LOVIN' it!

We got 20" of snow on Wednesday and we still have some in the yard! I grew up on the coast, so snow is very new to me. This is the most snow I've seen since visiting my hubby in Alaska in 2003.

Tanner LOVES it too! He wants to play in it non stop...I don't mind...we come in when his lips and finger tips are blue! HAHA!

The girls have been playing in it for days! We've had snowball fights, made snowmen several times, snow angels, tracks in the freshly fallen snow and laughed and giggled till our stomachs hurt.

A snowman for each of the kids...of course.

Now you know you live in Southern Cali when your outside in flip flops, a t-shirt and SHORTS! :)

Daily Musings...

I've seen a bunch of Daily Journals lately and decided I wanted to create a Daily Musings for each month and include photos, journaling, recipes and misc things from our daily family life.

I finished my January Journal and will add something each day. I used chipboard, envelopes, tags, journaling spots and lots of other random pieces. Can't wait to fill it up! If your interested, here are several others that are FUN!

I can not believe how fast Christmas is approaching!

This is by far my very favorite holiday and season. I love the music, the weather, shopping, decorating, family gatherings and most of all reflecting on the year.

Twilight

The much anticipated Twilight premieres TODAY!

And I saw the 12:01 showing! HAHA! I was pleasantly surprised that the movie was true to the book, mostly. It was over too soon and I would have gladly sat to watch it again! I'm sure I'll be back to see it in theaters again. And for the record, I'm on TEAM EDWARD!

We had a blast! We decided to go trick or treating for a bit then we headed to the movies to see HSM3! WOOHOO!

Homecoming

Homecoming was last weekend and Spencer was crowned Homecoming Prince at the Friday night Homecoming Football Game. FUN!

Spencer is going away to culinary school after he graduates. He is a GREAT chef! He wanted to bring his girlfriend home and cook for her instead of taking her out to eat.

He made a cheesecake...wow this was yummy!

MIA

I have been MIA due to my computer being on the verge of CRASHING! I've only been logging on periodically, checking emails and doing some online banking.

We are looking at Laptops and are narrowing down our choices and will SOON be back up and functioning normally again. I can't wait to catch up on all your blogs and get back to posting again!

After Surgery

Tim was up and moving around before surgery. He has pain in both ankles but xrays show no breaks or hairline fractures. The doctors say the pain is from the trauma. Puffiness under his eyes is getting better and his voice is stronger. His doctor said because of the extent of his injuries the bike may have fallen on him.

Operation on his hand was successful! He has pins to hold everything in place. The knuckle in his pinky finger was also cracked but the surgeon said he has performed many operations on bikers. He needs to start therapy before he can be released from the hospital. Therapy starts today.

They have since found the cause of the accident. Mechanical failure in an area previously repaired, the swing arm broke. The bike owner & mechanic feel terrible I'm sure.

After 7 1/2 hours of surgery, they were able to repair his upper and lower arm but were not able to work on his hand. The surgery for his hand is scheduled for Monday.

The pain is FINALLY under control. He was in horrible pain since coming out of surgery.

No internal injuries! No other injuries detected so far. We are so very thankful for that!

My Dad flew up to Salt Lake City yesterday and will stay with my brother until he is released.

Prayers Needed....

My brother was in a terrible motorcycle accident this morning. He races Buell's in Bonneville each year during Speed Week attempting to break the land speed record. He is in the 200 MPH club and broke a record on Tuesday. He was racing again this morning and something went wrong.

At 180+ MPH he crashed, slid and left a mark about 100 feet long. He has a compound fracture of his upper left arm, lower left arm and his hand is in bad shape. He was life flighted to a trauma center in Salt Lake City. My other brother is with him. As I type this he is in surgery.

He is alive! He is NOT paralized! He knows what happened and is himself, Thank God! He is concerned however if he will have use of his hand again. He is left handed and is a pressman by profession. Another racer was not so lucky yesterday and died, you can read the story here.

My request is this, the bike rolled on top of him and his injuries are bad, please pray that he will have use of his hand again to work. That no internal injuries are found. And that God gives my other brother comfort as he waits for the surgeon to tell him what can be expected.

Back To School

I can't believe it's that time already! We had a really fun summer!

I was so excited with the girls today for their first day back. They are now going to different schools, Macey still in Elementary and Ally now in Middle School. EKK! Ally was SO nervous today, I really felt bad dropping her off!

Lil' Miss Fashionista decided to try on about 15 outfits this morning to narrow down her pick for today! So what does any good mother do? TAKES OUT THE CAMERA of course! Thought I would share a couple! HAHA!

Spencer starts back on Wednesday, I can't believe he's a Junior this year! WOW!

Now that our schedule is back to normal, life can get back to our regular routine. Back to blogging...I've missed reading everyones blogs everyday!

Summer Olympics

Who's watching the 2008 Summer Olympics?

As a family we watched the opening ceremonies on Friday night and have been watching as many of the events as possible ever since. We were amazed watching the opening ceremonies, they were by far the best I've seen yet! WOW!

I don't know if I could pick one favorite event, but we are watching Swimming, Gymnastics, Volleyball and Diving so far. We are excited to see Fencing, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Track & Field and so many others. For fun we are looking forward to Trampoline & Table Tennis.

When it's hot....

PAINT! Everything drys so quick!

So my sister gave me this nightstand when she came out from Oklahoma a couple Christmas' ago. We've had it in Tanner's room since it goes with the colors but really didn't use it in there.

We decided to put it in the girls room between their beds.

But first, we wanted to change it up. I sanded, painted, distressed and sealed it in a couple hours. Thanks to the HEAT!

The girls want to add these hibiscus flowers since we have their room decorated hawaiian. I'm not sure about the flowers.
